Steve Morris Art Prints

Posted October 18th, 2010 in Illustration by Mike

Steve Morris (no relation) has created a great series of prints on available on Etsy. According to Morris:

“This image is from a series of images in black, red, and cream. The style is a fusion of early 20th century Illustration styles and my own creativity. The subject matter is based partially on a graphic novel I am working on, although some images only follow the spirit of the graphic novel and not the direct story.”

Some of the images are part of a series entitled “Butterbroda“:

…which juxtaposes beauty with decay and innocence with danger, creating a narrative which allows the viewer to create their own story.

The Covers of the Dallas Observer

Posted October 13th, 2010 in Design by Mike

While living in Dallas, Texas I quickly became a fan of the The Dallas Observer, a great alternative weekly newspaper. You could always rely on The Observer for great stories or a scandalous investigative report. What I always enjoyed most were the covers. Each week I looked forward to seeing this little work of art brought to the masses. Now you can see some of the best of these covers all in one place. Here are a few from 2010 and be sure to check out past years covers (2009,2008,2007)

Gap Gets the Message

Posted October 7th, 2010 in Design, Logos by Mike

Only a day after unveiling a logo redesign to the boos and hisses of the design community, Gap seems to be backtracking on it’s new look.

Gap Gets the Message

I’ve been unable to track down who designed the new logo (firm vs in-house), and after the overwhelmingly negative response, I would imagine no one is eager to take credit. It’ll be interesting to see if Gap will actually use any of the entries. Brand New has a great write up on the new logo and worth a read.

You can follow the crowd sourcing of Gaps new*new logo here. Interestingly enough, they are not using the new logo on their twitter page.

An Interview With Chris Creamer from Sportslogos.net

Posted October 6th, 2010 in An Interview With, Design by Mike

As a fan and a designer sports logos have always fascinated me. A team logo represents so much more than just a sports club. How a simple N overlaying a Y can evoke such passion from some and disdain from others is one hell of a feat. I could think of a few companies who would love to have that kind of brand loyalty.

Over the past 12 years Chris Creamer has created a monster of a site cataloging these logos. Sportslogos.net is truly awe-inspiring with a collection ranging from Major League Baseball to The National Rugby League.

I had the chance to interview Chris. Check it out after the jump.

The Evolution of the Cadillac Logo

Posted October 5th, 2010 in Design, Logos by Mike

Cartype.com has a great graphic of the Cadillac logo’s evolution over the last hundred years. I like the logotype they created in 1914 and find it interesting that it was the only time they lost the shield. Click the image for larger version.

How Ink Is Made

Posted September 30th, 2010 in Process by Mike

I’ll be the first to admit that the topic of ink making doesn’t not generate too much excitement, but as a graphic designer I can appreciate the craft that goes into its making. This video by the Printing Ink Company shows how color ink is created.
